I met with an insurance claims adjustor yesterday to examine roof damage from the recent hail storm in the eastern suburbs. Clint our customer was concerned about the recent hail and wind storms in the Minneapolis St Paul area as he had some leaking in the living room. On our first inspection with just the home owner we identified several areas on his roof, siding and downspouts that had hail damage and wind damage.

To the average person it is very difficult to see this kind of damage without the proper training and until you get right up on the roof. Clint didn’t even know that he had any damage except for some branches that had fallen on his garage. A couple weeks later when we met with the insurance claims adjustor we explained to him what we had found and the fact that his shingles were discontinued. Clint had hoped to get money for repairing some shingles for the garage, but because we were present for the inspection the adjuster gave Clint a new roof on his house and garage plus several other items!Folks if you think you might have had some storm damage contact us right away so we can help get your home restored to pre-storm event condition. Call me at 651-770-5570

One summer when I was about 12 years old we had a horrific hail storm. Dad and my brothers had been out baling hay and I was helping Mom weed in the garden. The sky was looking kind of dark and green to the west so we decided to go in. A few minutes later the wind and rain came up and started pounding us with hail as big as baby red potatoes. I heard some crashing sounds and Mom hollering from the living room. Here she was trying to hold the hail out of the picture window with the curtains.

I ran down the basement and got an armful of patio chair cushions that we used to cover the windows. When it stopped most of the windows on the North and West side of the house were shattered. Folks Terry Derosier here. Our windows come with a lifetime glass breakage warranty. And we can also replace your storm damaged roofing and siding. Call Window World of Minnesota today if you’re interested in new roofing, siding, or windows, if your home has been affected by recent storms.

Just the other day a concerned young mother from West St Paul came into our showroom with her beautiful new baby. She wanted to know some basic prices on about a dozen windows. Hi Folks Terry Derosier your local Window World owner here. She’d had another estimate and thought it might be high. We worked through some numbers and she said “Oh My, then I guess I would have paid too much. The other company said it would cost 21,000 dollars, but would lower it to thirteen thousand if I bought right then”.

I said “Ma’am you need to have Window World over right away because if your project costs much more than $5000 I would be surprised.” Folks don’t fall for those high prices and high pressure tactics from the other companies. Our prices are low because we sell on volume. Just call Window World for the best value out there.

I was out fishing on the St Croix last week with my buddies Randy and Tom. We did very well because Turk our guide from Croixsippi Fishing Guide Service www.croixsippi.com put us right on the fish. It was a regular potpourri of walleye, small mouth bass, a sunny, a drum, and even a sheep head. We kept about five walleyes.

Leaving the Projects Behind

While out on the boat enjoying the peace and bending the rod now and then, I got to thinking about how going fishing had kind of delayed some of my projects at home. This was just a fleeting thought that I quickly pushed away. I didn’t want to feel guilty about going fishing because I absolutely love to go fishing and it doesn’t hurt to let a few things slide. As I was enjoying the beautiful scenery of the St Croix River, I started thinking about all the tortured fisherman in Minnesota that would rather be fishing instead doing their own home improvements.

Get Back on the Lake, Leave the Fixes to Us!

It was a eureka moment as I daydreamed about all the fishing buddies in Minnesota having Window World take care of installing new windows, new siding or roofing all the while they were out catching the big one. If you’d like to spend more time fishing, just call Window World so we can take care of your home improvement projects this summer. It will free up a lot of time for you to do more important things like wet a line at the cabin up North or fish on the St. Croix with my buddy Turk.

I was out in Western Wisconsin and also in Woodbury MN yesterday looking at some friends roofs. The hail in Western WI was not severe enough for roof damage, but his downspouts, gutters, fascia, deck and garage door got hammered. The house in Woodbury had some marginal hail damage that warranted a call to the insurance company to determine if a new roof was needed. Hail needs to be hard and at least golf ball size or larger to damage a roof. The temperature of the roof at the time of hail also plays a big role.

I was interviewed on 96.3 KTWN this morning on how to recognize hail damage on your roof. We don’t recommend you get on your roof, but if you do, look at the soft metals like your chimney cap. If you had hail you will notice denting on it. It may or may not be severe enough for roof replacement. Call Window World for a free inspection to determine if the hail damage is severe enough for roof replacement. Listen to the interview to learn about hail and wind storm damage.

Window World MN had a great opportunity this week to share our knowledge on how to best detect storm damage on your home. With all the storms that have occurred in Minnesota, it’s important to know what to look for before you call a contractor. If you have any questions on how Window World can help your home recover after these storms, please don’t hesitate to call us!

Terry Derosier, owner of Window World Twin Cities and Window World St. Cloud, visited KARE 11 Sunrise to offer helpful hints, to get you through that tough time.

1. After a severe storm of high winds and possibly hail, what can be readily seen as damage on my home?
Damage to Roof, Siding, Gutters, and there may be cracked vinyl or dents on metal window frames.

2. How can I detect hail damage on my home? What specific damage should a homeowner look for, and what are the risks if not repaired?
It’s easier to see in early morning or early evening light when shadows play along the home and highlight uneven exteriors.

You can also shine a flashlight sideways against an exterior during the darker evening hours.
a. Home Exterior -
• Vinyl Siding: there will be multiple dents and holes. RISK: If not repaired, water can enter and cause rot.
• Aluminum Siding: there will be multiple dents, but not holes. RISK -The risk of water damage isn’t great, but can affect home resale and cause a home inspector to lower list price.
• Stained Wood Siding: There will be bright spots all across the siding.
b. Windows -
• Window panes: broken glass. RISK: the glass may fall out. Or the window seal may be damaged, which will create fogging. This can cause a loss in home’s energy and efficiency, creating higher heating and cooling bills.
• Window frames: dented vinyl or glazing. RISK: water can get into the home and sill, developing rot.
c. Roof -
• Shingles: This is difficult to see from ground level – you must get on the roof to examine. You will see big black spots in multiple areas across the roof where shingles have torn. Also, you may notice shingles on the ground around your home.
• Drain spout gutters: Another indication that your roof has suffered damage from hail and wind storms: little granules the colors of your shingles are shooting out of the water in your drain spout.

RISKS:
*Water leaks, causing rot and a sagging roof. If there is water, it must be stopped immediately before causing further damage.
*If a homeowner decides to wait a year after noticing some storm damage, the four seasons of hot and cold with all of the elements can rapidly weather a roof, gradually widening to an even greater area than the original damage, causing overall roof quality that was meant to last 30 years, now lasting 5 years.

3. How do I know who I should do business with?
• Be sure you are working with a licensed contractor, who is licensed to work in the state of Minnesota.
• Always ask for a free inspection before signing anything.
• After an area is hit by a severe storm, people often walk through a neighborhood handing out materials and offering estimates, often called “Storm Chasers.” Check to see if these contractors are from Minnesota by viewing license plates and driver’s licenses. Often, contractors from any state can provide great work, but if follow-up service calls are required, it is difficult to track down an out of state contractor.

There’s been a lot of rain in Minnesota lately which might have caused some wet basements. Here are a few tips on preventing wet basements.

Make sure your gutters are clean.

If you forgot to clean your gutters this spring, overflowing gutters can cause wet basements because the water is not being directed away from the foundation. If you are tired of cleaning your gutters there are many products that can keep leaves out. At Window World we have tried many different leaf proof type products and have found a gutter cover that works well for leaves and pine needles.

Make sure your downspout extensions are on.

At the bottom of each downspout make sure you have a 2-4 foot extension on. This will direct the water away from the foundation and keep it from seeping though the foundation wall. Sometimes downspout extensions can be in the way of mowing. It’s important to get these back on. At Window World we utilize a flip up downspout extension so it takes the hassle out of going around it with the lawn mower.

Replace old leaky gutters.

If you have seams in your gutters now or if they are rusted out, they could be leaking and causing a wet basement. New aluminum seamless gutters can keep the water directed down the gutter, to the downspouts and away from your foundation.

Re-hang poorly sloped gutters.

If your gutter is drooping in the middle, it will overflow and potentially cause a wet basement. Gutters need to be slightly high in the middle or high on one end to direct the water to the downspout. When we hang gutters, we usually figure about ¼ bubble slope when we put the level on it.

Flashing and sealing for gutters is also very important.

Flashing from the roof edge into the gutter needs to be properly installed. Otherwise water can get behind the gutter and into your foundation. Also, sealing around the downspout holes with a good gutter sealant is important to keep the water in the water management system.

Add gutters to your eves where you don’t have any.

Sometimes because of house additions or other changes, you may need to add more gutters. For example, on one of my rental houses I put in an egress basement window. It was located under an eve that did not have gutters. Because of this change, it created a place for water rushing off the roof to leak into the basement. Adding new seamless gutters and a rain diverter solved the problem.

Look at your landscaping.

If the lawn is sloping towards the house this could be directing water towards the foundation. You might have to add some fill around the foundation in order to get the water to move away from the house.

Remember the #1 Solution

Remember that the number one solution for wet basements is to put seamless gutters and downspouts on the house so the water is directed away from the foundation. Window World can come out and replace old gutters with new seamless gutters and put on a gutter cover to keep leaves out for a very modest investment.

I was out in Wilkesboro NC last week for an owners meeting at Window World Corp headquarters. It really impressed me to see the leadership in the Window World organization. So many owners doing their best to make sure that WW customers are being served all across the USA. Also, Tammy Whitworth the owner of Window World Corp. has a vision for top quality products and services and a commitment to helping others through Window World Cares.

About Window World Cares

WW Cares is the philanthropic organization that donates to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital and also the Veterans Airlift Command. St Jude is that special hospital founded by Danny Thomas that offers free hospitalization and care for children with cancer. Window World Cares has donated over $2 million in the past few years. Veteran’s Airlift Command, based right here in the Twin Cities, offers a free jet airplane ride home to veterans that are leaving the hospitals after recuperating from war injuries. It makes me proud to be a Window World owner and to be donating to these worthy causes. Thanks to you our customers for your donations!!

It seems that spring always leads to some severe weather in Minnesota. When you see tornados, hail or high winds happening in the southern part of the country, you know it’s just a matter of time before the weather patterns work their way to Minnesota. It’s wise to have a rehearsed plan in place to seek safety for you and your family before severe weather is on the horizon. If you do get storm damage to your home, consider using local contractors for your work. It’s like watching bees descending on honey when there is hail damage, as the out-of-state storm chasers descend into local neighborhoods. How can you have confidence in deciding on a contractor. Here’s a short insurance restoration checklist.

1. Are they licensed and bonded?

Many out-of-state companies will just use a local contractors license to set up shop. When the work is mostly completed they high-tail-it out of town and leave all the warranty work for later. Many of these type of Storm damage companies go “Boom” and then “Bust.” If they bust there is no money to do your warranty work. The bonding money that is available through the state is very limited.

2. Do they have a regular place of business?

It’s easy for a polished salesman to set up shop in a pick-up truck and talk a good line. Look for established companies that have a bricks and mortar place of business that they did not just lease last week. A company’s reputation on being there for service after the work is all done is very important.

3. Are they members of the Better Business Bureau?

Even if they are not members they might have a report on them. Even some of the well known storm repair companies that are members of the BBB have a list of complaints a mile long. Check them out.

4. Does their vehicle have out-of-state license plates?

This should be a big red flag for you when considering your restoration contractor.

5. How long has the company been in business?

Even local contractors can go in and out of business very easily. You see, there is a storm damage contractors secret that they do not want you to know. Storm restoration work brings a huge cash flow into a business. It looks like you’re making a lot of money for months on end. Many spend it on other things before paying all their bills. It eventually catches up to them in December – February. Some plan it this way and walk away with a pile of money and head south. Others just close their doors and open another business with a new contractor number. It leaves the supply with a large amount owed, with potential liens against your property. It also leaves you without any warranty or future service. Choose wisely and avoid worry’s!

6. Do they do Storm restoration work?

Some companies just don’t know how to deal with the paperwork of insurance companies. Do they have an experienced person on their staff to handle all the work that goes with properly billing and getting paid by the insurance company?

7. Does your storm damage contractor have other jobs that you can view? Do they have a list of referrals?

These are just a few questions you can start with. I’m sure that you will come up with a few of your own so that you can be confident in your selection of a local storm damage restoration contractor. Oh by the way- Window World does do storm damage restoration work.
