Oh, how glorious it is to open your windows to the world after months of trying to keep the elements at bay. Now we’re anxious to let in the fresh spring breezes and the delicious sunlight that seems so scarce during the winter months.

Over the course of winter, though, your windows probably got a little dirty - both inside and out. Here are some tips for cleaning your windows from the outside.

Try to avoid ladders. Instead of climbing skyward, try using an extension handle.

Cobwebs. Look for spiderwebs both on the inside and outside. These spider dens become tricky once you start to clean - not so much due to the spiders, but the strands get everywhere.

Watch the water. Too much water will make your job harder. However, if the windows are very dirty, or if it’s a hot day, you may need more water.

Spare the soap. If you use soap to clean your windows, don’t use too much. Overuse of soap can make wiping more difficult, and can lead to streaks.

Streak free. On a hot day, be sure to wash and wipe at the same time. This will help to eliminate streaks. Your best bet will be to wash your windows on a cloudy day..

Go with the wind. If there’s a breeze, make sure you clean in the same direction as the wind. This will keep any spray from getting on clean windows.

Clean frames. If your window frames need cleaning too, try dipping a cloth in a good fungicide. Alternatively, you can use a solution of one part bleach to three parts water.
